We see patients at our office a few times each year for a HydraFacial or IPL skin resurfacing treatment. What about the other 360 days of the year? What are you doing about your skin at home?
Most of your skincare happens at home, so improving your at-home efforts can dramatically change your skin for the better. Here are 10 of our favorite ways to care for your skin:
- Cleanse – Dirt and oil can clog up your pores, leading to breakouts and dull-looking skin. Cleansing removes dirt and grime to reveal fresh and clean skin underneath. We recommend cleansing the skin 2x daily using a high-quality cleanser formulated for your skin type. We can help you find a great skincare product; ask us for a recommendation.
- Moisturize – Dry, thirsty skin can be both uncomfortable and unattractive. After your cleanse, add moisture back in. We recommend a lightweight lotion during the summer months and a richer, more hydrating cream for the winter. Don’t skip moisturizer if you have oily skin— all skin types can benefit from a moisturizer. The key is finding the right products for your skin.
- Massage – Massage offers more to your skin than just TLC. Rubbing the skin and underlying tissues stimulates the circulatory system, helping to bring vital nutrients to the skin and move toxins out. As you moisturize, massage your skin.
- Exfoliate – Is your skin hiding underneath layers of dead skin cells? Peel them away with an exfoliating treatment like a chemical peel. Light-duty peels and exfoliants can be safely performed at home. For a deeper, more dramatic transformation, come into the office for a professional-grade peel.
- Target – Tackle your trouble spots. What does your skin struggle with? Serums, eye creams, and other skin treatments can focus on improving the areas where your skin is lacking.
- Protect – Don’t forget about daily sunscreen. UV damage is a primary cause of premature aging and skin damage. Using sunscreen can protect your skin from the sun. Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen each day (SPF 30+ is an excellent place to start). If you’re spending time in the sun or getting wet, reapply every couple of hours.
- Pamper – We love a good spa day. On occasion, give your skin some extra TLC with a clay mask, a sea salt soak, or something similar. These pampering extras don’t need to happen every day but should be a regular part of your skincare routine.
- Feed Skin from Within – They say, “You are what you eat.” This timeless adage definitely applies to the skin. Make sure your diet is filled with colorful fruits and vegetables and plenty of protein so that your body has the tools it needs to create healthy, beautiful skin.
- Catch Some ZZZZs – There’s a reason it’s called beauty sleep. Getting enough sleep is essential for having bright and beautiful skin. When you’re short on rest, your body goes into stress-mode, releasing more cortisol and boosting inflammation. Try and get at least 7-9 hours of sleep each night.
- Get Help from a Pro – Take excellent care of your skin at home, but don’t forget to visit us too. Professional treatments can drastically enhance the results you’re creating with these simple daily efforts.
