How Often Should I Get a Botox Touch-Up?

Of all the non-surgical cosmetic procedures to choose from, Botox continues to be the top choice for people seeking aesthetic or anti-aging procedures. Due to being minimally invasive and accessible, it’s a great choice for smoothing wrinkles and fine lines.

At Allure Anti-Aging & Aesthetics, we can target and relieve wrinkles in patients from 18 years of age to older with both Botox and Dysport injections. A common question amongst our patients during consultations is how often should you return for a maintenance session? First, let’s explain how Botox works.

How Botox Works

Botox is a neurotoxin that acts as a local paralytic. When used at the early signs of aging, it helps patients with strabismus, or a roving eye, can calm facial tics, and normalize vision. In recent studies, it can also help alleviate severe migraines for some patients. However, it’s most commonly used to target the fine lines and wrinkles in the face, neck, and hands by keeping tiny facial muscles from contracting and pulling your face into expression lines that can make you appear older.

The injections are done in several places around the muscles that need to be relaxed. The entire process is seemingly quick and painless and can be completed in as little as ten minutes. Contrary to popular belief, Botox injections done by properly trained professionals will not make your face flat or expressionless. You can still smile, frown, laugh, and squint— your muscles just won’t allow the wrinkles to form.

Botox Frequency

So, you’ve decided to get Botox. Now how often should you go in for treatments? That all depends on your age, wrinkle severity, and how long the treatments normally last for you. Not every patient’s experience is the same, but the average time frame for Botox efficacy is around four months. After that time period, you’ll start to see your original facial lines begin to re-form.

If you’re in your twenties and using Botox as a preventative treatment, you may consider scheduling a treatment every 12 weeks. Otherwise, a maintenance series of injections scheduled every 12- 16 weeks is most likely sufficient. With no downtime involved, you can go right back to your day and enjoy the results for months.

Good Candidates for Botox

Botox could be right for you if you are experiencing moderate-to-severe dynamic wrinkles, which are wrinkles caused by muscular contraction. If you don’t like the look of fine lines and wrinkles on your face, you can get treatments:

  • On the forehead
  • Around the eyes (crow’s feet)
  • Around the lips (smoker’s lines)
  • Around the mouth (frown lines)

It’s encouraged that you be in good health before having Botox treatment. Tell our staff if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have a neuromuscular condition, have any type of skin infection near desired injection sites, or you have any specific allergies.
